TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Cherokee Nation Career Services hosted the Wildland Fire Program Safety Fair at OneFire Field recently, providing children and adults the opportunity to learn about fire safety and emergency preparedness.
Participants engaged with various booths and first responders, exploring a showcase of emergency vehicles and equipment. Department representatives were available to answer questions and provide educational opportunities for those attending.
During the event, Deputy Secretary of State Canaan Duncan presented a proclamation signed by Principal Chief Hoskin Jr. and declaring October as Fire Prevention Month in the Cherokee Nation. The proclamation honors the Cherokee Nation Wildland Fire Management Department for its dedication to protecting the reservation and its citizens.
“The Cherokee Nation Wildland Fire Management is committed to educating our tribal citizens through fire safety fairs, social media, and brochures, among many other activities and services,” said Principal Chuck Hoskin Jr. “The Cherokee Nation is dedicated to strengthening the safety of the reservation and all citizens through robust wildfire prevention education and wildland fire training. Our Wildland Fire Management team is first-class and a leader among Indian Country.”
The Wildland Fire Management department provides fire suppression, fuels mitigation and prevention services to all 14 counties across the Cherokee Nation reservation, as well as other tribes and agencies when needed.
