TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Council of the Cherokee Nation issued a public notice on August 14 to fill the unexpired term in Council District 11 due to an upcoming vacancy.
On Aug. 1, 2024, Deputy Speaker Victoria Vazquez announced her resignation from her District 11 seat in order to spend more time with her family. Her resignation is effective at noon on Aug. 29, 2024. Her current term expires Aug. 14, 2025.
The Aug. 14, 2024, notice complies with Cherokee Nation constitutional and statutory requirements for filling an unexpired Council term of less than one year. In compliance with the statute, the notice appeared in the Aug. 17, 2024, edition of the Vinita Daily Journal. The notice was previously posted across various social media pages, including Cherokee Nation’s Facebook page.
